Title: Resources for Teaching Foundational Literacy to Adult English Language Learners
Presenter: Betsy Winchester, Jeffco Adult ESL & Literacy and LCC Board President
Description: Do you want to teach reading and writing to an adult English learner, but don’t know where to start? In Colorado we have many immigrants who had limited schooling in their home countries, but very few literacy classes are available to them. Tutoring is a great option for these students, but it can be daunting if you have not taught reading before. Join this session to learn about low cost or free resources for teaching reading and writing to adults with low literacy. This session is appropriate for tutors, teachers, and administrators who are seeking to learn more about available resources.

Betsy started her teaching career in middle school Social Studies in 2000, and began tutoring adult English learners in 2015. Since then she has taught classes and tutored in adult English as a Second Language (ESL), citizenship exam preparation , and ESL literacy. She completed an MA in Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education in 2022. When she’s not teaching, Betsy enjoys learning languages, learning how we acquire language, and exploring ways to become a better teacher. Betsy currently teaches refugee learners online for Jeffco Adult ESL & Literacy and serves on the Board of Literacy Coalition of Colorado.

Katie Pham has been involved with migrant and refugee communities all of her life. In 2012 she moved to Colorado and began working with the refugee community in Aurora and Denver. She accidentally fell into teaching in 2016 and has been enamored ever since. She has experience teaching all levels of students, but has a passion for those who come to the classroom as true beginners.
