Karin Bates presented “Beyond the Basics: Building Bridges for Advanced Adult English Learners.”

Session Description:
Many community-based ESL programs successfully serve beginning and intermediate learners, but teachers and tutors often wonder what to do when learners reach higher levels of English proficiency. These students may have completed a curriculum but still do not feel confident taking the next step toward community college, workforce advancement, high school equivalency testing, or other lifelong learning opportunities.
This workshop session was given by accomplished TESOL expert Karin Bates and explored effective approaches for teaching high-intermediate to advanced adult English learners. Participants learned how to build academic language, critical thinking, reading, discussion, and writing skills through engaging materials such as novels, authentic texts, project-based learning, and content-rich activities. Volunteers left with practical strategies and resources they can immediately use with high-intermediate and advanced learners.

Foundational literacy is a critical issue affecting thousands of adults, yet it often receives limited attention within adult education systems. In this informative session, LCC Board Chair Betsy Winchester (MA, Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education, Jeffco Adult ESL & Literacy Teacher) examines who adult learners with low literacy are, the barriers they face, and why specialized instruction is essential for their success.
The session will provide practical guidance for teachers and tutors, including key components of evidence-based reading instruction and effective teaching resources. Participants will leave with increased awareness, actionable strategies, and tools to better support adults developing literacy skills.
