October 2, 2024 — Last school year we hosted these successful networking events. We are so thankful for everyone who participated!
Starting in January 2024, the Literacy Coalition of Colorado (LCC) will be hosting five monthly Zoom events to bring people working in adult education from around Colorado for time together to connect, learn, and share. Each session will be facilitated by an LCC board member/adult educator. There will be brief presentations along with opportunities to talk through some of the challenges and successes in adult education in Colorado today.
Sign up using the registration links below. You can sign up now for all five sessions between January and June 2024. (We will be having our Literacy Coalition of Colorado training conference in March 2024. Stay tuned for more details. Sign up for all our mailings here.)
These networking events are free and open to adult students, tutors, educators, administrators, and anyone with an investment in adult literacy and education in Colorado. Because LCC is a non-profit and has overhead expenses to make these events possible, a suggested donation of $5.00 for every event attended ($25.00 for all 5 events) is welcome. You can process a donation here. Please Note: These sessions are not recorded as they are intended to be very interactive and with conversational sharing.
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18, 2024 6-7:15 pm (Mountain)
Topic: What is Adult Literacy? Let’s have a conversation about what adult foundational skills are, what is a coalition, and what are some of the biggest needs for adult learners, educators, and administrators in Colorado. This session will be facilitated by Karin Bates of Intercambio Uniting Communities and anyone involved in adult education (ESOL, ABE, HSE prep, etc.) in Colorado is invited. Students in adult education are especially welcome to share their perspectives of being an adult learner in Colorado.
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2024 6-7:15 pm (Mountain)
Topic: Student Retention and Engagement. We’ll discuss and connect over how to keep adult learners engaged and sticking with a program of learning. What works? What doesn’t? We’ll be reviewing some of the current research in publication and how to make principles in adult learning practical and relevant.
THURSDAY, APRIL 18, 2024 6-7:15 pm (Mountain)
Topic: Emerging Literacy. Many adult learners in Colorado come to English classes without a solid foundation of literacy in their first language. For this networking session, we’ll be connecting over how to give learners the foundation they need to be successful readers and writers in English and move ahead with their life and work goals.
THURSDAY, MAY 16, 2024 6-7:15 pm (Mountain)
Topic: Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility in Adult Foundational Education. Come to learn and talk about how to create equitable classes for all learners. We’ll learn about and discuss effective practices to honor the varied backgrounds of adult learners and help provide what they need to be successful.
THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2024 6-7:15 pm (Mountain)
Topic: Digital Literacy. For our closing event of the 2023-2024 school year, we will have a guest presenter Jessie Hawthorn from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment come to speak with us about digital navigators, building access to affordable high speed internet that can be used to learn online and work from home, web-enabled devices and digital skills. We’ll have a chance to meet with her and ask questions about digital literacy and how we can meet adult learner needs in this critical area.
