Dr. Steinke, thanks so much for working with me on this and for writing such great questions. YOur first question was: How do you do the read aloud passage. The adult you are working with reads aloud and you listen. When the reader gets to the marked timed sample at the end of the passage, you keep track of oral reading errors and time the reading of the passage. Sometimes adults are nervous about reading aloud. If this is the case, then start with taking silent reading timed samples first. Also, make certain you have a difficulty level in the text where your reader would be reading 90% of the words correctly.

Second question: Yes, poor readers are hesitant to read aloud or to read with another adult. This is why it is so important to have the correct level of difficulty, so your reader experiences success from the onset.
